Sharks are some of the most ꜰᴏʀᴍɪᴅᴀʙʟᴇ ᴘʀᴇᴅᴀᴛᴏʀs in the world’s oceans, and they are known to engage in feeding ꜰʀᴇɴᴢɪᴇs when presented with an opportunity to consume a large amount of food. One such chance is when a whale ᴄᴀʀᴄᴀss sɪɴᴋs to the ocean floor.
The result is a spectacle known as a “shark feeding ꜰʀᴇɴᴢʏ ,” a ᴄʜᴀᴏᴛɪᴄ and sometimes ᴠɪᴏʟᴇɴᴛ event that can be fascinating and ᴛᴇʀʀɪꜰʏɪɴɢ.
One Hundred Sharks Around The ᴄᴀʀᴄᴀss!
An angler has filmed an incredible feeding ꜰʀᴇɴᴢʏ off Western Australia’s south coast as countless sharks ꜰᴇᴀsᴛᴇᴅ upon a whale ᴄᴀʀᴄᴀss.
John Cloke recorded the footage off Norman’s Beach near Albany last week, where a shark ᴀʟᴇʀᴛ remained in place after the 15-meter humpback whale washed ashore.
“At one point, there’s probably about 100 sharks around the ᴄᴀʀᴄᴀss … it was pretty full-on,” he said.
“We were in sʜᴏᴄᴋ at just how many sharks surrounded it. We couldn’t count them all.”
Indy Crimmins and John Cloke were camping at the beach when they spotted the whale ᴄᴀʀᴄᴀss.
Mr. Cloke and his partner Indy Crimmins spotted the ꜰʀᴇɴᴢʏ while camping at the beach about 30 kilometers northeast of Albany.
“I was fishing off the beach, and I could see this big thing bobbing in the water with birds around it, so I flew the drone out and saw it all,” he said.

Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development research scientist Dr. Steve Taylor said whale ᴄᴀʀᴄᴀssᴇs often attracted sharks in large numbers.
“It’s beautiful footage,” he said.
“As someone who works in shark research, it’s fascinating footage but not unusual.”
Dr. Taylor said it took a lot of work to tell what species were involved.
While some great whites were likely present, he said there would have been far more whaler sharks, a family that included bronze whalers.
“A whale ᴄᴀʀᴄᴀss is a good feeding opportunity for many different species of sharks in our coastal waters,” Dr Taylor said.
