A 10-Year-Old Elephant And Her One-Month-Old Baby Elephant Were ᴛʀᴀᴘᴘᴇᴅ In A Concrete Drain In Central Thailand.
The duo ꜰᴇʟʟ into the 7-foot-deep hole due to the rain and the sᴛᴏʀᴍ’s mud.
The park contacted the veterinarians for assistance as they were ᴄᴏɴᴄᴇʀɴᴇᴅ that the mother might sᴄʀᴇᴀᴍ to attract the surrounding 30-elephant herd if they tried to ᴇxᴛʀᴀᴄᴛ the infant.
The team member built a temporary barrier to ᴘʀᴇᴠᴇɴᴛ the potentially ᴀɢɢʀᴇssɪᴠᴇ herd from ɪɴᴛᴇʀʀᴜᴘᴛɪɴɢ.
Unfortunately, during the rescue, the mother elephant suddenly ʟᴏsᴛ ᴄᴏɴsᴄɪᴏᴜsɴᴇss, sᴄᴀʀɪɴɢ all who came to help them.
“It was impossible to get near the baby while the mother was nearby, so we gave her three ᴅᴏsᴇs of ᴛʀᴀɴǫᴜɪʟɪᴢᴇʀs, but she moved towards her baby before ᴘᴀssɪɴɢ out and ʜɪᴛ her ʜᴇᴀᴅ,” said lead national park veterinarian Dr. Chananya Kanchanasarak.
The Rescue Team Finally Lifted Them Successfully With A Crane
The calf suckled milk while her mother ꜰᴀɪɴᴛᴇᴅ in the hole, giving the rescuers time to rest.
Although the ᴛᴏʀʀᴇɴᴛɪᴀʟ rain made it ᴄʜᴀʟʟᴇɴɢɪɴɢ to approach the pair, the rescue team finally lifted them successfully with a crane.
Three ᴠᴇᴛᴇʀᴀɴs jumped on the mother’s ᴄʜᴇsᴛ right after she landed on the ground, hoping she would wake up soon. Thankfully, the animal “regained consciousness after being sᴛɪᴍᴜʟᴀᴛᴇᴅ by both the baby and me,” shared Dr. Chananya Kanchanasarak.
Mother And Baby Are Safe!
Staff at the park and veterinarians cleared the area to make space for the elephants to rejoin and reunite with their herd.
Many people couldn’t stop their tears when witnessing this epic rescue. “Dᴇsᴘɪᴛᴇ the ᴏʙsᴛᴀᴄʟᴇs, the mother did not leave her baby’s side,” one shared.
“This experience touched our hearts and will be one of the most memorable rescues we’ve done,” another added.
The vet said that both “mother and baby are safe,” She felt grateful for the “hard work of all parties involved in the rescue.”
The rescue of the 10-year-old elephant and her one-month-old calf is a testament to the compassion and dedication of the people and organizations involved in their return.
It is a reminder that we must continue to work towards the conservation of wildlife and their habitats to ensure that ɪɴᴄɪᴅᴇɴᴛs like this are ᴘʀᴇᴠᴇɴᴛᴇᴅ in the future.
