There’s something special about unlikely friendships; the friendship between a dog and a deer is no exception. In a world where we often hear stories about the ᴄʀᴜᴇʟᴛʏ that animals inflict upon each other, this story is a refreshing reminder of the kindness in nature. This is especially true in different kinds of animals living under one roof. Spending all day together inevitably creates a special bond among the animals. Faulconer rеscuеd Huey nine years ago, and they’ve been inseparable ever since. Huey is very protective of his mom, so Faulconer was surprised when he started showing interest in befriending Sassafras instead of seeing the curious deer as a ᴛʜʀеᴀᴛ.
“Huey was a little confused at first and cautious,” Faulconer told The Dodo. “I would talk to them both and ensure they felt safe. Slowly, they just started talking over the fence!”
Now, Sassafras comes back often to swap stories with her new BFF.
Sometimes, Sassafras even brings her two babies along to visit. “It’s adorable,” Faulconer said. “I love watching them.”
For Huey and Sassafras, it doesn’t matter that they’re different species. What truly matters is dependability, kindness and being tall enough to chat over the fence. Over the years, the friendship between the dog and the deer has grown stronger. They play together, nuzzle each other through the wall, and genuinely enjoy their company. Whenever the dog barks, the deer jumps playfully as if to say, “come on, let’s play!”
What’s heartwarming about this friendship is that it reminds us of our capacity for kindness and friendship. Like the dog and deer, we too can connect with others who are different from us. Whether it’s a person from a diverse background, a new neighbor, or even a stranger on the street, we can choose to reach out and build bridges rather than walls.
