The Zoo Is Delighted To Welcome The Twin Monkeys Whose Mother Just Went Through A Labour Bᴀᴛᴛʟᴇ

Three adorable newborn monkeys born at a London zoo have been given names for the holiday season. A pair of male-female twins among the ʙᴀᴅʟʏ ɪɴᴊᴜʀᴇᴅ Colombian spider monkeys are considered to be just the fourth pair born in Europe since records began in 1958. Brussel and Sprout are their names, while Cranberry will be the name of their new male ᴍᴀᴛᴇ, who is also about three weeks old.

The birth of twin spider monkeys is a rare and exciting event, as it is uncommon for them to have multiple offspring at once. The mother monkey has been carefully monitored throughout her pregnancy. The zoo’s veterinary team has been working around the clock to ensure she and her babies are healthy and thriving.

The trio was born at Chessington World of Adventures Zoo in November, but their names were given to them only lately – a nod to the holiday season and their vegetarian diet. Mother Kryah, 10, and father Mariecello, 12, welcomed Brussel and Sprout into the world on November 13th.

‘Welcoming our rare new visitors to Chessington has been immensely thrilling for the zoo team,’ said Sam Whitbread, zoo collections manager at Chessington World of Adventures Resort. We’re closely checking their health and development, and so far, the babies have gone a long way.’

Spider monkeys are known for their long limbs, prehensile tails, and incredible agility. They are found in the rainforests of Central and South America, where they live in large groups and spend most of their time in the trees. They are brilliant and social animals with complex communication systems, including vocalizations, body language, and facial expressions.

The newborns join a troop of 15 Colombian spider monkeys at Chessington. The species has been listed as ᴄʀɪᴛɪᴄᴀʟʟʏ ᴇɴᴅᴀɴɢᴇʀᴇᴅ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) (IUCN).

The zoo hopes that the arrival of the twin spider monkeys will help raise awareness about the importance of conservation efforts for these and other ᴇɴᴅᴀɴɢᴇʀᴇᴅ species. Spider monkeys are considered ᴠᴜʟɴᴇʀᴀʙʟᴇ due to habitat ʟᴏss and fragmentation, ʜᴜɴᴛɪɴɢ for meat and the pet trade.

By providing a safe and nurturing environment for these animals, the zoo is helping to ensure that future generations can appreciate and learn from these fascinating creatures. Visitors to the zoo will have the opportunity to see the twin spider monkeys grow and develop and to witness firsthand the incredible bond between mother and baby in the primate world.
