It’s often said that old dogs can’t learn new tricks, but this heartwarming story proves that they can still have surprises in store for them. At the Spartanburg Humane Society, an unadoptable senior dog named Loco was given the sweetest surprise party by the shelter staff and volunteers.

“She was wearing a birthday hat and frilly collar, and the entire staff gathered and sang to her,” Angel Cox, chief operating officer at Spartanburg Humane Society, shared.
”She had a sweet potato cake and she loved it! The company that made the cake brought her a Happy Birthday banner for her office door.”
The party included no other pets but many of Loco’s favorite people. “She is ᴘɪᴄᴋʏ about ʜᴇʀ people,” Cox said.
“When she loves you, she really loves you. But the people she does not like, she ʜᴀᴛᴇs them. And she does not like other dogs at all.”
This Senior Dog Had To Sᴛʀᴜɢɢʟᴇ With Several Health ɪssᴜᴇs
Loco was brought to the shelter in 2020 to ᴅᴇᴀʟ with ongoing ᴍᴇᴅɪᴄᴀʟ ᴘʀᴏʙʟᴇᴍs.
After over two years, she’d been considered as a staff member at the center. She even had her own cozy space, which was kept separate from dogs and people.
“We moved her to an office that is more comfortable,” Cox said. “She has 3 to 4 dog beds, and sleeps in all of them.”
This senior dog had to sᴛʀᴜɢɢʟᴇ with several ʜᴇᴀʟᴛʜ ɪssᴜᴇs, which meant anyone adopting her had to ꜰᴀᴄᴇ financial ᴘʀᴇssᴜʀᴇ.
“When she arrived she was 13, ʜᴇᴀʀᴛᴡᴏʀᴍ positive, ᴛʜʏʀᴏɪᴅ ɪssᴜᴇs and ɪssᴜᴇs with her ʜɪᴘs, so she was not a great candidate for adoption because she came with so many ɪssᴜᴇs and her care would be ᴇxᴘᴇɴsɪᴠᴇ for most people,” Cox noted.
Loco Has Got Better After Numerous Care And ᴛʀᴇᴀᴛᴍᴇɴᴛs.
Even though she’s older than most of the other residents in the shelter, her health condition is relatively positive.
A new home seems unnecessary when she’s ʟɪᴠɪɴɢ at the center as an “office dog” now.
Apparently, with lots of affection and care from the staff, her ʟɪꜰᴇ at the place is never similar to a ᴍᴜɴᴅᴀɴᴇ shelter ʟɪꜰᴇ.
Cox said Loco’s courage and spirit make her one of the most special pups they’ve ever had.
The story of Loco’s surprise party is a reminder that all animals, regardless of their age or health, deserve love and care.
